The Hidden Bloat That's Killing Your Google Rankings

My mum's website was loading eleven fonts.

She didn't know. Some she'd added years ago trying different looks. Some came bundled with widgets she'd installed and forgotten about. A few were from a theme she'd switched away from, but the code was still there, loading invisibly on every page.

The site took six seconds to load on mobile. Google noticed. Her rankings tanked. Women searching "yoga classes near me" were finding her competitors instead.

What I found when I looked under the hood

I ran her site through Google PageSpeed Insights expecting minor issues. The score was 34 out of 100. On mobile, it was 19.

Here's what was actually happening on every single page load:

• 11 font files. Three were duplicates. Two were from a theme she hadn't used in years. One was loading a font she'd never even heard of.
• 3 analytics scripts. Google Analytics (twice, somehow) and a Wix analytics thing she didn't know existed.
• A dead cookie banner. She'd installed a GDPR plugin in 2019. The company had since shut down. The script was still trying to reach a server that no longer existed, adding two seconds to every load.
• Uncompressed images. A 4MB hero photo that could've been 200KB.
• JavaScript from widgets she'd deleted. The widgets were gone. The code was still loading.

None of this was visible to her. The site looked fine. It just loaded like it was wading through mud.

Why this happens

Wix, Squarespace, WordPress with plugins: they're all designed to make adding things easy. Nobody designs for removing things.

Every widget you try leaves traces. Every theme you experiment with deposits code. Every "install this for better SEO" plugin adds weight. Over three or four years, a simple site becomes a stack of sediment.

The platforms don't warn you. They benefit from you not knowing. Wix would rather sell you a "site booster" add-on than tell you the problem is the eleven fonts you accidentally installed.

How to check your own site

This takes five minutes.

1. Run PageSpeed Insights. Go to pagespeed.web.dev and paste your URL. Look at the mobile score. If it's under 50, you have a problem.
2. Check "Eliminate render-blocking resources." This section lists everything that's slowing down your initial load. Fonts, scripts, stylesheets. If you see things you don't recognise, that's your bloat.
3. Look at "Reduce unused JavaScript." This catches orphaned code from plugins and widgets you deleted but didn't fully remove.
4. Check your images. Scroll down to "Properly size images." If you're serving a 2000px wide photo in a 400px container, you're wasting everyone's bandwidth.

What I did to fix it

Time spent finding the problems: one evening. But cleaning up Wix was like bailing out a leaky boat. I could get the score up, but the bloat would creep back every time she added anything.

So I rebuilt it properly. Simple site, no page builder, no plugin spaghetti. Same content, just without the baggage.

New PageSpeed score: 99.

Within three weeks, she was back on page one for "yoga classes Surrey." Enquiries came back.
